What is the difference between a Psychotherapist, Psychologist and a Psychiatrist?

Jhan has helped me to understand myself, my emotions and actions and has helped me develop the skills to change.General Practice Psychotherapists, to be federally registered, must have attained the necessary university degrees in counselling and the required practicum hours as set out by the governing professional associations and are held accountable by stringent ethical standards.  In the practice of Psychotherapy we employ various treatment methodologies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Talk Therapy, Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), Mindfulness Techniques and others also utilized by Psychologists.

Psychologists hold a PhD in Psychology and are trained in the science of research and clinical counselling.  Psychologists cannot prescribe medication, are not covered by OHIP and utilize the same treatment methodologies as Psychotherapists.

Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medication for the treatment of various mental illnesses such as Bi-Polar disease, Schizophrenia and other disorders associated with a chemical imbalance of the brain.

What is the difference between counselling and life coaching?

The overall aim of counselling is to work toward a peaceful, purposeful and fulfilling life, by helping you develop the strengths to:

  • Overcome the distressing problems of life.
  • Overcome the disruptive painful influences of your past
  • Overcome emotional difficulties

Life Coaching focuses less on overcoming difficulties and focuses more on developing and building skills that help individuals:

  • Expand their Vision
  • Build their Confidence
  • Unlock their potential
  • Take practical steps to achieve their goals

What is Christian Counselling?

At Pathways we have defined Christian counselling as the co-existence of the Holy Spirit and sound Psychological principles in the counselling session using the Bible as the authoritative guide.
